“Your one-stop dessert store.”

Cake Spade is a little dessert shop situated in Orchid Hotel, around the Tanjong Pagar area. The cake store sits among the many Ramen & Japanese restaurants around the hotel. The place is named after after the cake server tool, and as you can already tell, it is also a little play on the famous American fashion brand “Kate Spade”. Owner Zenn Eng fell in love with baking a decade ago, a hobby which then snowballed into a small home-run business before opening a store in Tanjong Pagar to keep up with demand.

Cake Spade was one of those places that I had constantly heard of among the horde of cafes & dessert places that were in existence. It was only when my friend & I were on our way to try Hanare [review soon], that we both spotted Cake Spade. I was pretty dumbfounded, having been to that Tanjong Pagar area around three times before and not realizing that Cake Spade was just THERE. We both then decided to give it a try right after dinner at Hanare since both places were extremely close to each other.

Aesthetic
The store of Cake Spade is actually really small, with the majority of their seating placed outside. The place is designed very simply & to the point, with their cake counter the first thing you see when you enter the store. The off-white colour of the store, combined with the warm hanging lamps make the place look quite elegant yet keeping things fun & also retaining a sense of simplicity. One iconic part of Cake Spade is their logo, which is a play on both the card suit “Spade” & also the cake serving tool. Cute.

Food
As you can tell from its name & the photos above, Cake Spade specializes in cake. Of course, the cakes here are quite special & different from your usual suspects. Along with many unique flavours, the cakes are baked from scratch, using the finest & freshest ingredients. One of the most iconic cakes from Cake Spade has to be their Tofu Cheesecakes, with a unique texture that differs from ordinary cheesecakes. You can also find brownies, crumbles & cupcakes being offered.

Cake Spade’s desserts are priced lower than most places, which was a fantastic bonus. Usually a slice of cake can go up to 8 bucks, but the ones here are kept affordable. If I remembered correctly, there isn’t any service fees or GST either.

Service
My friend & I actually stumbled across Cake Spade before heading to Hanare. Being my usual paranoid self, we decided to ask if we could reserve a few of their cakes as I was afraid they could be sold out by the time we came back. I was pleasantly surprised when it was possible! So thumbs up for the service. The staff were also very nice & tolerant of my usual “Food Blogging” antics. (Over-ordering then having the food packed for takeaway.)

My friend & I did find it odd that the store closes at 8pm on weekdays (Mon-Thurs), which is earlier than normal. Customers looking for a place to hangout over some desserts had to be constantly turned away as they were closing. (Only takeaway was available by then.) Just something we noticed, so if you are planning to try their cakes on site, do head there earlier. (My friend & I cut it close as well, we went there at around 7.30pm.)

Hummingbird Cake ($5.90) Banana, Pineapples & Coconut "You give me that hummingbird heartbeart." - Katy Perry Their Hummingbird Cake was really good. It was soft, perfectly moist & not overwhelming. The cream ratio was just right as well and the mixture of the three fruits complemented each other fantastically.

Strawberry Tofu Cheesecake ($5.90) Probably one of Cake Spade's best sellers, the Tofu Cheesecake. It comes in a few flavors, among which are Strawberry, Mango or Peach. (Also depends on when the fruit is in season.) My friend & I really loved their Tofu Cheesecakes. The texture was unlike anything we've ever had. It was more gelatinous rather than the usual smooth creamy texture of cheesecakes. Of course, it was actually really really good! The cake is also quite subtle, it wasn't overwhelming at all.

Mango Tofu Cheesecake ($5.90) What makes the Tofu Cheesecakes so good is the use of tofu. This makes the cake much lighter & also much healthier. (A fact that my friend loved, being a health nut.) This was also as good as it's strawberry counterpart.

Red Velvet Cheesecake ($6.80) Unfortunately, their normal Red Velvet Cake was sold out that day, so I decided to go for the cheesecake variation instead. If you're looking for a traditional cheesecake texture, this is the cake for you. Smooth, creamy & delicious. Another winner in my book.

Red Velvet Cupcake ($3.80) Since there was no Red Velvet Cake available, I decided to order a Red Velvet Cupcake instead as it was basically ALMOST the same thing. The cupcake was also good. Moist & soft on the inside, great cream cheese icing on top. It's as good as their cakes.

Nutella Fudge Crumble ($4.20, +$2.80 for a scoop of Vanilla Bean ice-cream) Nutella, oh Nutella, wherefore art thou? Who can resist or say no to Nutella? Seriously, who?! This was served warm, if I remembered correctly. I only noticed the option to add a scoop of ice-cream after it was served & quickly sent my friend to add it on top. This was pretty good as well. The scoop of ice-cream definitely complements the crumble and I would think it's a definite must to add it.

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
I’m really glad that I stumbled across Cake Spade & finally managed to try it that day. The cakes here are simply fantastic & very unique. A definite must-try for anyone who is a lover of cakes, desserts or health-conscious. The cakes here definitely tops my list of great desserts in Singapore. I recommend a visit if you have not tried their cakes yet. Do go in a smaller group and/or on weekdays as the place is really small & can get crowded from the white-collar workers knocking off from work.
